Notes:

This James Reeve and his wife, Deborah, contributed the land for the Mattituck Parish Burying Ground (currently adjoining Old Bethany Cemetery). See photograph of their headstones, pg 249 of Craven's "History of Mattituck, Long Island, New York".

James-3 (James-2, Thomas-1) Reeve is the son of James-2 and Mary (Terry) Reeve and grandson of the Puritian immigrant Thomas and Mary (Purrier) Reeve and and the Puritan Immigrant Thomas and Marie (___) Terry.

James' parents had died before the 1698 census. He married about the time of the census. His entry in that census is:

James Reeve and Deborah, Mary, Isaac, Thomas, Mary

This census entry raises some interesting questions. The first Mary, and Isaac and Thomas are likely siblings. There are claims made that Deborah, the wife of Richard-2 Howell, was a sister of James Reeve. If so, the Salmon Records gives her year of birth as 1689 and she could be the Deborah listed here in 1698, being a 9 year old sister. But, the second Mary suggests the possibility that James Reeve and Dorothy, his wife, had married before the census and have a young child named Mary. This would exclude the sister Deborah from this household and raise questions about the validity of the identify of the wife of Richard-2 Howell, or if she is a Reeve, or if, as a nine year old was living in another household. A final note is that nephews and nieces and cousins could be listed in the 1698 census in households with the same last names. Since the exact relationship was not written down, we don't know for sure what the exact relationships of people in the households were.

This James-3 Reeve's father (James-2 Reeve), inherited the lands of his grandfather, Puritan immigrant William Purrier, including a farm in Mattituck. His descendants for several generations retained most of that farm (see pg 38-39 of Craven's History Of Mattituck for more details.
