Census of 1870: Reeves, J. R. age 66 Male White - Real Estate $920, Personal $500 he is listed as a farmer living near Gadsden, Tennessee on July 30, 1870. He was born in South Carolina. Wife Eliza 58 born in NC. daughters Martha 25 born NC and Susan 17 born TN.
A land deed dated November 15, 1873 between S. D. Reeves and Kenan Williams lists a J. R. Reeves as a witness to the transaction.
Stephen D Reeves entry in the 1880 Census says his father was from South Carolina. The dates and places all seem to fit. I am listing Stephen as a member of this family although I am continuing to search for additional proof that they are indeed related. BLR - 03/16/1990
Jennings Rooker Reeves is mentioned in the book 'REEVES REVIEW BOOK II' by Emma Barrett Reeves (C) 1982. July 17, 1990 - I spoke to Mrs. Lois Hamilton of Trenton, Tennessee who called in response to my letter to Mr. Clarence Eugene Reeves dated March 28, 1990. She and her sister have been researching their families for over thirty years. She gave me the following information about J. R. Reeves: He was listed in the census of 1860 as J. R. Rives age 55, his wife Eliza age 45 from N.C. and their children William T. (22), Stephen D. (19), Martha (14), Eliza (12), Sarra Jane (10), and Susan (8). He and his family and mother and brothers came to Gadsden, Tennessee on April 27, 1847. Correction: H. J. Priestley says in his book about the Reeves that the older sons of Willis Reeves came to Crockett County about 1844. Marriage Information: Bondsman : William E Reeves Witness : Samuel C Robins Birth: IGI Source 12-JUN-1803, Winston Salem, Forsyth, North Carolina some records show Jul-1804 in South Carolina. Note: J. R. Reeves is buried in the Salem Presbyterian Cemetery near Gadsden, Tennessee., and his tombstone shows his birth as Dec. 12, 1803.

Notes:
This child is based on the census of 1840 showing a female age 5 to 10 in the household. She does not appear in later census records, so I assume she must have died young.

Notes:
Note: I was told that William was killed in the Civil War. The directory of confederate soldiers from Tennessee during the Civil War lists the following: REEVES, William T. - Pvt. 48th (Voorhies') Inf. The middle initial 'T' may have stood for TITMAN (his mothers maiden name). The 'T' may have been for Thomas. After his Uncle Thomas Irving Reeves. I don't think this is him. I also found a microfilm record for a W. L. Reeves who enlisted on March 10, 1862 in Trenton, Tennessee. He joined Co. B of the 47th Infantry under Major Patterson. The record says he died on Aug. 1, 1862 in the Tupelo, MS hospital.

Wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Issued Clothing
Bought 160 acres on Forked Deer River from Kenan and Reena Williams.
Listed as Richard Reaves, wife Sallie, daughters Cora E and Ruth C and son William.
According to microfilm records, Stephen D. Reeves served in the confederate army during the civil war. He enlisted on December 8, 1861 and was assigned to Company B of the 47th Regiment of Tennessee. The service records state that he was slightly wounded in battle at Murfreesboro, Tennessee on December 31, 1862. Another record shows where he was issued clothing on September 5, 1864. After his discharge, he returned home to marry Miss Sallie J. Walker on November 12, 1866. They had nine children. three girls (the first two being twins) and six boys between the years 1867 and 1884.
According to Land deed records from Gibson County, Tennessee (Deed Book #5 - 1873 to 1874 - Page 278), Stephen D. Reeves purchased 160 acres of land from Kenan and Reena Williams on November 15, 1873. It was located on the North side of the Forked Deer River. One of the witnesses to the transaction was J. R. Reeves (may have been his father or brother).
The census records of 1880 show that Stephen was born in South Carolina. He claimed to be able to read and write, and that he was a farmer. He died in Gibson County, Tennessee sometime in 1886. Stephens middle name was given as Decatur on his son Phillip's Death Certificate.

Note: Stephen may have been named in honor of Stephen Decatur who was a well known Naval Officer who won fame in the war with Tripoli. He later served with great distinction in the War of 1812. Decatur County, Tennessee is also named after him.
SOURCE: 1880 Agricultural Census for Gibson County, Tennessee. gives the following:
Reeves, Stephen D. Land owned 26 tillable, 140 wooded. Livestock listed as follows: 1 Horse, 1 Milk Cow, 2 calves (1 sold live and 1 slaughtered), 17 Swine, 30 or 80 poultry. Also says that 175 lbs. of butter were made on the farm in 1879. The census was taken on June 15, 1880. The next person listed was Thomas Yancy (I assume this was his next door neighbor.

Marriage 1 : Mary ? , b. 06 November 1831, d. 22 September 1906
Notes:
On July 25, 1870 the U.S. Census showed W.L. and Mary Reeves living in Milan, Tennessee. Value of Real Estate $5,400, personal property $1, 500. Land Grant: Grantee : Reeves, W. L. Number : 8615 # Acres : 119 3/4 Date : August 31, 1849 County : Gibson Book : ** Missing ** Census of 1870 shows W. L. Reeves age 56 making him born in 1814. Most other records found show him born in 1804. There is an original court document from Gibson County, Tennessee dated November 9th, 1842 that lists William E. Reeves, W. S. (L) Reeves and John Rooker as witnesses. This proves that some of the children of Willis Reeves were in west Tennessee much earlier than previously thought.
