Marriage 1 : Thomas WYTHE, II m. abt. 1541 Saxtead, Suffolk County, England, b. abt. 1520, d. 1564
Notes:
He was taxed at Suffolk County, Saxtead, England in 1524 and a Thomas Wythe's will was proved at Ellough in 1528, which may have been this Thomas's father. His widow Elizabeth held 2 copyholds in Saxtead Manor in 1547. He and his wife had two known sons, Thomas and John Wythe.
Wyeth--With--Withe--Wyth--Wythe
Webster defines the name as a flexible, slender twig or branch, especially one used as a bond or rope; a willow or osier twig. Wyeth is defined also as a brave one; a dweller near a fork or willow tree or near the woods. It is listed in Suffolk Surnames in a chapter entitled "Names for Trees." The family name originated either in Norfolk or Suffolk County, England; not in Wales, as has been believed by some of the family members. The two counties are fairly small and border one another in eastern England. Apparently the family moved between them and it cannot be determined in which the name began.
ARMS--"Arms AZ 3 griffins passant in Pale, OR, armed and langued gules" from Norfolk families by Walter Rye. Burke's General Armory lists the above and the following for "With"; AR 3 griffins passant in Fesse, OR." Before 1483 almost all who held land bore arms for the purpose of identification in combat. These were chosen without consent of the king and were not recorded. Generally, the eldest son inherited the paternal arms. Younger sons often varied the blazon slightly to comprise their own shield. The Wythe family acquired arms before the College of Heralds was created, thus there is no record of their origin.
Authorities on genealogy in America frown on the use of blazons or crests as pretentious, unless one can prove the right to bear (male descent from the original knight). However the practice is very popular today. Many families have crests representing their name with no proof of connection to the originator of the arms.
Sir Thomas Banks states "The name of Wyth or With appears very ancient." "Norfolk Families" by Walter Rye lists "Wythe, a knightly family--once Lords of Smallburg." Family legend claims that George Wythe, the first Chancellor of Virginia, and the signer of the Declaration of Independence was descended from a brother of Nicholas Wyeth. He may be of the same family, as George and Thomas are both names appearing frequently in the Saxtead Wythe family, but no connection could be proven.
There are many variations in the spelling of the name. This must be attributed to the fact that few people could write, and those who did spelled phonetically their own idea of the words and names spoken to them. In Colonial times the name was spelled "Wythe" in both the Virginia and Massachusetts families. The Virginia family has maintained this spelling. In Nicholas Wythe's will, written in 1680 his name is spelled "Wythe." During his sons lifetime it gradually became "Wyeth," and has remained that way with the New England branch.
The earliest mention of the name is in the Pipe Roll of 3 King John (1203). "Ric'd With is fined one half mark by the king's chief justice (Bedfordshire & Buckingham)." Oliver Wythe was Bailiff of Yarmouth (County of Norfolk) in 1269..John Wyth de Canterbrig (Canterbury ?) is mentioned as one of the beneficed clergy of Suffolk in 1272; Robert & John Wyth were Bailiffs of Yarmouth in 1276-1300, in the realm of Edward I. Geoffrey Wyth lived at Smallburg in Norfolk County in 1300. Bloomfield writes that "Sir Geoffrey Wyth lived at Hepperuth in Suffolk County, and moved to Norfolk after his marriage to Isabel de Stalham." He lived at Rushall, Norfolk from 1315-1331, which property he acquired from his wife. His son Geoffrey married in 1317, and his son Oliver in 1340. A will of John Wythe was proved in 1387.
Sir Charles Colvill in his "History of the Colvill Family" states: "In 1406 Sir John Colvill married Emma, daughter of Sir John Wythe of Smallburg, Worsted, etc., of Norfolk County and coheiress of the ancient families of Wythe, St. Omer, Stalham and Rivershall whose arms are henceforth quartered in the Colvill shield." Both Sir Charles and Walter Rye end the Wythe pedigree with two daughters, but Rye continues: "The name, however, remained in the county, for Edmund Wythe of Asleshan of Norfolk County was returned as being worth 40 pounds in the subsidy return of 1523." John, Nicholas & William Wythe were listed as being of the gentry there in 1433.

Notes:
A random obituary came over one of my Michigan watchlists a few minutes ago for a 79-year-old woman named Loretta Gump Fisher. I clicked it, and ya know, the last Ms. Gump Fisher has the most interestingly named family I think I've heard outside of fiction (or Mormons). I don't know any of these people and I feel like I can write a whole novel based on the interlaced and curliqued names alone.
Loretta Gump Fisher Loretta Gump Fisher, 79, passed away due to injuries sustained in a fall. She departed this life on September 19, 2006, surrounded by family. She was born in Detroit, Michigan and lived most of her life in Kent, Ohio.
