Notes:
Johannes (John) Rema was born in the early 1730's in the Rheinland-Pfalz area of Germany. It is possible that the ancestors of Johannes Rema came from Switzerland. Researcher Stephen Rima of Massachusetts has found a reference of the Rima family in Switzerland in 1450 in a town called Mosgna. He believes this family relocated to Germany from Switzerland.
19 SEP 1765 aboard the ship Betsy from Rotterdam, Germany by captain John Osman, it took two months
Johannes Rema arrived via Rotterdam to Philadelphia, PA in 1765 with his wife, Catherine (her maiden name is unknown) and at least 3 children aboard the ship Betsy under Capt. John Osman. Another of the Hasenclever recruits, they traveled about two months, and were accompanied by several neighboring families.
John Rema was naturalized on March 8th, 1773, along with several neighbors. He was a member of the Tryon County Militia. Serving with him were sons John, Jr., Jacob, and George. Son Peter was two young but told stories of how his father and older brothers would leave the fort to go and fight. When they returned for supplies, Peter and George would run the clothes and provisions out to them.
During the raid in May 1780, sons John, Frederick and Jacob were captured Aby Indian Tories@@ and taken away to Montreal, Canada. They escaped (some records indicate after about two weeks, while others show them there from July to December) and made their way home. After that raid, the Rimas and many of their German neighbors removed to Caughnawaga/Fond, Montgomery County. After the war they returned to what was left of the farm in Schuyler, Herkimer County.
The book Early Families of Herkimer County, New York, confirms much of this information. It reports that "John Riema was listed in the German Flats militia in 1769, was naturalized 8 Mar 1773, and was later in Revolutionary Service. John Sr. lived first at the New Petersburg (now Schuyler NY) settlement of the Peter Hasenclaver immigrants of 1766, along with the Ayer/Oyer, Finster, Lentz, Valentine Miller, and Witrig families. Then later he apparently moved with several neighbors to the New Germantown settlement in the Reimensneider's Bush area northeast of Herkimer. The Hatch Papers say John Reima was captured and shot during the Tory Indian raid of 1780, and at the same time his sons John jr, Frederick, & Jacob were captured." (page 212).
The family name is found spelled in a variety of ways, including Rema, Riema, Reima, Rimah.
